Essential Oils or Fragrance Oils for your Handmade Soap

Handmade soaps can be made using either essential oils or fragrance oils to provide fragrance and we belive that both are fine. However, there are key differences between essential oils and fragrance oils. Ultimately, the best choice for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences.

    Essential Oils

    • Natural: Essential oils are derived from natural sources and are extracted from bark, flowers, plants and seeds. They are almost always naturally derived, plant-based and vegan.
    • Aromatic: Essential oils typically have a more natural range of strong, concentrated and unique aromas.
    • Benefits: Essential oils have a variety of benefits, including antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties. They can also help to improve mood, relieve stress, and boost the immune system.
    • Longevity: Essential oils tend to evaporate more quickly than fragrance oils. This means that the scent of essential oil soap will fade more quickly than the scent of fragrance oil soap.
    • Availability: Essential oils are not always easy to find, and they may be more expensive than fragrance oils.

    Fragrance Oils

    • Synthetic: Fragrance oils are created in a laboratory and do not contain natural ingredients. Some handmade soaps with fragrance oils are vegan and some aren't. All our handmade soap is vegan friendly.
    • Scent: Fragrance oils can be made to smell like anything, including fruits, flowers, and desserts.
    • Availability: Fragrance oils are more widely available than essential oils and can be found at most craft stores.

Essential Oils v Fragrance Oils - Is One better?

Both fragrance oils and essential oils can be used to add aromas to soap products, but they have different properties and benefits. Ultimately, the best choice for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences.

In summary, essential oils are a more natural product whereas fragrance oils are synthetically made but with a wider variety of aromas. All of our handmade soaps (made with essential oils or fragrance oils) are vegan friendly, palm-free, and have not been tested on animals. They are made using the traditional cold-process method with skin loving plant-based oils and butters.

Handmade Soap - 7 Tips and Tricks to Make your Soap Last Longer

    1. Store your soap properly. Store your soap in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Soap can fade, discolour and may lose its fragrance if left in direct sunlight. This will also help prevent it from melting or becoming too soft.
    2. Keep your soap dry. After you use your soap, rinse it off and let it air dry completely. When soap is wet, it dissolves more quickly. So, avoid leaving your soap in the shower or bath, and always store it in a dry place.
    3. Use a soap dish with drainage. A soap dish with good drainage will prevent the soap from sitting in water. This will help keep your soap dry.
    4. Use a washcloth. Using a washcloth when you wash your hands or body will help you use less soap.
    5. Don't leave your soap in the shower. If you leave your soap in the shower, it will be constantly exposed to water and moisture, which will cause it to dissolve faster.
    6. Cut your soap into smaller pieces. If you have a large bar of soap, you can cut it into smaller pieces. This will make it easier to use and will also help it last longer.
    7. Avoid using water that is too hot. Hot water can cause soap to dissolve faster. If you want your soap to last longer, use cooler water.
